Members who have more than one insurance plan have more than one "copayer." This causes the "coordination of benefits" rules to determine which company has to pay first. Your primary payer will cover what it owes on your claim. Then, your secondary provider will cover the remainder of the cost.
If you do not have additional insurance, Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, is considered your primary payer.
Original Medicare members may opt to enroll in Medigap to help supplement their coverage and help with costs not covered by Original Medicare. These costs can include deductibles and coinsurance payments. Therefore, some costs may be covered by your secondary insurance. However, this is not always the case.
If you have questions about what is covered by your secondary insurance, contact Medicare at any time at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227; TTY users 1-877-486-2048).
