Only some Medicare plans are able to be accessed across state lines.
Original Medicare Part A and Part B
Original Medicare Part A and Part B are not state specific; coverage will follow you from one state to the next.
Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D Prescription Drugs
Both of these plans are non-transferable from one state to the next. Enroll in a new plan during a special enrollment period.
Medigap
Because most Medigap plans do not have provider networks, they are also not state specific.
Medicare Select
The one Medigap exception is Medicare Select which does use a provider network. In this case, two options are available to you:
- Switch to a regular Medigap policy from the same insurer.
- Use the special enrollment period to sign up for a different Medigap plan (A, B, C, F, K, or L).
