When does the Medicare Prescription drug coverage begin?

Any individual who signs up for a prescription drug plan during the annual election period is eligible for coverage on January 1 that following year. The annual election period is from October 15 through December 7. 

Any individual who signs up for a prescription drug plan outside the annual election period will be eligible for coverage on the first day of the month following receipt of your completed application. You may also request a later effective date.
