What is the difference between Medicare Supplement insurance plans F, G, and N?

Medicare Supplement Insurance, or Medigap, is standardized across the nation, exempting Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Each of the 10 plans available has its own letter, with current plans being A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. These plans are all offered through private insurance companies. However, each plan of the same letter must offer the exact same benefits, despite the insurer or location.

Medigap Plan F

Medigap Plan F is one of the most popular plans. It offers the most comprehensive coverage at the best rate. Its coverage includes:
  • Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospice care coinsurance
  • Medicare Part A deductible at 100%
  • Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • Medicare Part B deductible
  • Part B excess charges
  • First three pints of blood used in a procedure
  • Skilled nursing facility (SNF) care coinsurance
  • Coverage outside of the United States (up to plan limits)

Medigap Plan G

Medigap Plan G offers all of the same coverage as Medigap Plan F except for the Part B deductible.

Medigap Plan N

Medigap Plan N offers all the same coverage as Plan F except for the Part B deductible and excess charges. It also only covers the Medicare Part A deductible at 50%. However it will cover 100% of Part B coinsurance, excluding copayments of up to $20 for office visits and up to $50 for visits to the emergency room that don't require inpatient admission.
