Is Medicare Part B necessary?

If Medicare is your primary insurance at the age of 65, you must obtain Medicare Part B. You are not able to purchase any supplemental insurance without having both Medicare Part A and B first.

An exception to this is if you actively work for an employer who has more than 20 employees and provides you with health insurance, then Medicare can be your secondary coverage. In this case, you may delay Part B as your current insurance may already provide outpatient benefits.
