You may submit an online application for Medicare through Social Security Administration's website socialsecurity.gov. The application allows you to save your progress and return to it later. It also offers you the option to view your status upon submission.

It is essential for individuals to research and understand Medicare before applying so they can be more prepared for how it all works. Typically, applicants may submit an application as soon as three months prior to their 65th birthday. The initial enrollment period is from three months prior to three months after your 65th birthday. You may be subject to higher, permanent premiums if you miss this initial enrollment. Also, for those who miss the initial enrollment period, they can register during general enrollment which is from January 1 through March 31. Coverage will begin on July 1. 

Medicare does not provide coverage for all health and medical costs. Individuals are still subjected to deductibles, copays and coverage exclusions. For items not provided by Medicare, Medigap insurance policies may offer coverage and can be purchased through different insurance providers.
